Sophomore guard
Steph Reichle of Illinois State has been voted to the second five of the 2001 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Womens Basketball team. She is the only sophomore among the 10 players earning first- or second-team honors, joining eight seniors and one junior.
Reichle, a public relations major with a 3.83 cumulative grade average for three semesters, has been the Redbirds starting point guard nearly the entire season. The Lincoln, Ill., native is No. 2 in steals, No. 3 in assists, No. 4 in scoring and No. 4 in rebounding for Illinois State this season.
The selection process parallels the Verizon Academic All-America voting, with the election coming from womens basketball media relations representatives from each Missouri Valley school. Nominees must be starters or important reserves, have played in at least 50 percent of a teams games and must carry a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade average on a 4.0 scale. The nominees also must have sophomore athletic standing and be in at least their second year at their institution.
The first five included Southwest Missouri State all-America guard Jackie Stiles, Bradley forward Jennifer Jolley, Drake guard Kristin Santa, Creighton guard Angela Timmons and Wichita State guard Courtney Sims.
Reichle is joined by SMS guard Tara Mitchem, Bradley forward Marti Davis, Northern Iowa center Abbi Schutte and Creighton guard Krissie Spanheimer. Eight players earned honorable mention as 18 of the 35 nominees received recognition.2001 Missouri Valley
