The Illinois State womens tennis team collected two more wins with a double-header victory over Toledo and Northern Illinois Friday at Evergreen Racquet Club.
In the first match of a double header, Illinois State (6-4) swept Toledo, 7-0. Later that evening, the Redbirds beat Northern Illinois, 6-1.
Its good to string two wins together, head coach Chris Hoover said. I thought Toledo would present more of a challenge, but Northern Illinois was a good match and everyone fought hard. Any day you can string two together is a good day, and its always nice to beat someone from the state.
Liina Suurvarik defeated Whitney Wasilewski at No. 1 (6-1, 6-1) and Alesia Mikalayeva beat her opponent at No. 2, Natalya Natyshak (6-2, 6-0).
At No. 3, Zana Friganovic cruised to a first set victory, 6-1, struggled in the second set, 7-5, but came out on top against Marivi Cuartin. Freshman Elizabeth Bingier added one to her win total with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Marie Craig at No. 4.
Brigette Zarazee moved her record to 15-5 with 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 against Donna Peters while Alana Hoffman had no problems with Sarah Rothenberg at No. 5, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, Suurvarik and Mikalayeva defeated Toledos No. 1 team of Cuartin/Craig, 8-4. Friganovic and Hoffman played a tighter match at No. 2 with Peters/ Wasilewski, 8-6. Shelby Lipson returned to the doubles lineup to team with Zarazee as the ITAs No. 39 duo thrashed Natyshak/Rothenberg 8-0.
Brigette and Shelby are on a roll, Hoover said. We keep to keep that up.
In the nightcap, Suurvarik, Mikalayeva and Friganovic won at the top three spots for ISU while Brigette Zarazee and Alana Hoffman collected wins at Nos. 5 and 6.
Last week I struggled in the second set, so I was happy that I played well in the second set today, Suurvarik said. It was difficult to play her (Savic) because she changed her pace. Its always different playing against left-handed serves, too.
Suurvarik and Mikalayeva teamed to defeated Tiedt/Opel at No. 1 doubles, 8-6 and Zarazee and Lipson improved to 11-1 with an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles over Savic/McIntyre.
The Redbirds continue their homestand next Friday night against Valparaiso at 8 p.m. at Evergreen Racquet Club.
