The Illinois State womens tennis team rebounded from a loss Sunday with a 7-0 sweep over San Francisco Monday afternoon at the Olympic Club.
Liina Suurvarik and Alesia Mikalayeva wasted little time winning their matches at Nos. 1 and 2, 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1, respectively.
At No. 3 freshman Elizabeth Bingier dropped her first set to Carey Savage 5-7, but stormed back in the second set and the tie-breaker to win the match 5-7, 6-0, 10-1.
Zana Friganovic, a senior from Tucson, Ariz., defeated Nikki Kobayaski at No. 4, and sophomore Alana Hoffman took her match against Heidi Kromschroder at No. 5 in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 6, Brigette Zarazee moved her record to 12-3 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Jaime Johnson.
Its nice to get a win, Friganovic said. Weve been practicing hard, and battling against Notre Dame definitely put us in a position to win today."
We learned how to deal with the element of mist, fog and sun today, so that should help us play outside again tomorrow, Zarazee added.
In doubles play, Suurvarik and Mikalayeva defeated Tweeton and Johnson at No.1, 8-2. Bingier and Hoffman won their match at No. 2 against Volkmann and Savage, 9-7. The No. 3 senior duo of Friganovic and Zarazee beat Kromschroder and Kobayaski 8-3.
The Birds conclude their three-match road swing Tuesday afternoon at No. 1 Stanford.
