The Illinois State womens tennis team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as it swept Southwest Texas State Tuesday afternoon at New Orleans.
The No. 1 doubles team of Liina Suurvarik and Zana Friganovic battled to a 9-7 victory over Sarah Tritt and Sara Convery. The No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams of Alesia Mikalayeva/Alana Hoffman and Brigette Zarazee/Shelby Lipson both defeated the Bobcat teams 8-1.
They have very good doubles teams, Southwest Texas coach Brenda Burgess said. Its nice to play somebody you never get to see in a match thats well-fought.
In singles, Mikalayeva won her match at the top spot against Tritt, 6-1, 6-0, while Friganovic won her 15th match of the year against Lisa Sternberg at No. 1, 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 3, Lipson defeated Convery, 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Elizabeth Bingier beat Linsey Ziriax in straight sets at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0. Zarazee moved to 18-5 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 over Christy Sumrow. Florida native Alana Hoffman won her match at No. 6 against Makenzie McCravey, 6-1, 6-2.
Scheduling is paying off for us right now, Redbird coach Chris Hoover said. We knew they werent going to be the toughest team well see this week. They kept us out here and made us hit a lot of balls.
The Redbirds (8-4)continue their spring break swing tomorrow afternoon at Louisiana-Lafayette.
