Redbirds Off to Strong Start at Anteater Classic

After an idle several weeks, the Illinois State mens tennis team won its first round against Idaho State at the 22nd Annual Anteater Classic in Irvine, CA Thursday.The team captured five singles wins and two doubles victories. At No. 1 singles Ricky Heath defeated Idahos Malcolm Swan in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6. At No. 2 Jason Smit took down Simmo Sommer, 6-0, 6-2 while senior Yew Ming Si flew past Vasili Devidze, 6-2, 6-1at the No. 3 spot. Brent Steven and Albert Piasecki each earned a win at the No. 4 and No. 5 spot defeating George Devidze, 6-0, 6-1 and Hestian Stoica, 6-3, 6-2. . First doubles Heath and Si crushed Idahos Devidze and Devidze, 8-1 while the duo of Smit and Steven battled to a 9-8 victory over Sommer and Stoica at the No. 2 spot. No. 3 doubles Piasecki and Thommas de Liefde put up a fight, but fell to Swan and Butch Stavridis, 9-7. The Redbirds will continue play Friday against Southern Mississippi, who defeated Southwest Missouri State in its first round, 7-0. Play for the tournament will resume early Friday morning.
