After a first round victory against Idaho State at the 22nd Annual Anteater Classic yesterday, the Illinois State mens tennis team dropped its match to Southern Mississippi in the second round of play Friday at the University of California-Irvie Tennis Stadium.
Two singles wins were captured by the team. At the No. 2 spot Jason Smit battled against Mississippis Daniel Homedes to a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 victory while No. 5 Albert Piasecki defeated Mathias Werren in a tight match, 7-6, 7-6.
Illinois State won all doubles matches with first doubles Ricky Heath and Yew Ming Si taking down Miikka Kangas and Homedes, 8-2. No. 2 Smit and Brent Steven were victorious against Werren and Nicolas Carteret, 8-6, while the duo of Piasecki and Thommas de Liefde fought hard to a 8-6 win over David Jansson and Konsta Finnila, 8-6 at the No. 3 spot.
Play for the tournament will resume Saturday when Illinois State takes on Pacific at 9 a.m. at the UCI Tennis Stadium.
