To continue its winning season, the Illinois State mens tennis team cruised to another victory this Saturday against Saint Louis at the Evergreen Racquet Club.
Ricky Heath and Yew Ming Si had no problem trampling Lance Vodicka and Thomas Kwong at the No. 1 doubles spot, 8-3. No. 2 doubles duo Jason Smit and Brent Steven put up a stern fight and defeated Saint Louis Samjeeu Paramanathan and Eric Sasser, 8-6, while No. 3 Thommas de Liefde and Albert Piasecki flew past Mike Hoosier and Taylor Curran, 8-2 to move their record to 7-0 as a doubles team.
Illinois State dominated in all six singles matches with Heath battling against Vodicka to a 7-5, 6-2 victory at the No. 1 spot. At No. 2, Smit took on Kwong and claimed a 6-2, 6-4 victory, while Si easily overtook Curran, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot. No. 4 Brent Steven, recovering from an ankle injury, defeated Hoosier 6-1, 6-1, while Piasecki and de Liefde picked up wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, 6-4, 7-5 and 6-1, 6-1.
Overall head coach Greg Kennett is pleased with the win.
As a whole we played a little flat, Kennett said. But we scored some big points which I am happy with.
Coach Kennett has been working steadily with the team to improve serves.
Everyones second serves were much improved today, especially Ricky, Yew and Brent, Kennett said.
The Redbirds continue their season on the road March 14 when they take on Depaul at 3 p.m..
