Redbirds Tough it Out at Anteater Classic

After an upset in the second round of the 22nd Annual Anteater Classic, the Illinois State mens tennis team suffered another disappointment when the team fell to Pacific University in the third round of play Saturday at the University of California-Irvine Tennis Stadium. The Redbirds were able to capture two singles wins with Albert Piasecki defeating Pacifics Gernot Kershbaumer, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot. Thommas de Liefde battled Greg Rietsch to a 7-5, 6-2 victory at the No. 6 position. All doubles matches were won by the team. At No. 1 doubles Ricky Heath and Yew Ming Si were able to take down Tobias Abrahamsson and Claes Lindholm, 8-5. At the No. 2 postion Jason Smit and Brent Steven cruised to a 8-5 victory against Dietrich Haug and Kershbaumer while Piasecki and de Liefde flew past Maxime Lacroix and Rietsch, 8-1 at the No. 3 spot. Play will resume for the final day of the tournament Sunday morning at the UCI Tennis Stadium when the Redbirds take on Tennesee Tech and battle for seventh place in the tournament.
