Riding a six-match winning streak, the Illinois State womens tennis team looks to make it eight straight wins and stay undefeated in the Missouri Valley Conference as it travels to Evansville and Southern Illinois this weekend.
The Redbirds, 14-5 overall and 5-0 in league play, face Evansville (6-9, 0-4) Friday and head to Carbondale, Ill., Saturday for a meeting with the Salukis (5-6, 2-1).
We will fight and work hard this weekend, head coach Chris Hoover said. We cannot take anyone for granted. Hopefully well come out and perform well.
In last weekends Valley action, the Birds, ranked No. 74 by the ITA, took matches against Creighton, Northern Iowa and Drake. This weekends opponents squared off against each other with Southern Illinois defeating Evansville, 5-2.
Leading the way for the Redbirds is Alesia Mikalayeva with 24 wins, while freshman Liina Suurvarik and senior Brigette Zarazee are right behind her with 23 victories. Senior Zana Friganovic has also broken into the 20 win column with 21 on the year.
Fridays match at Evansville begins at 4 p.m. while Saturdays match is slated for noon in Carbondale.
