Illinois State sophomore
Alesia Mikalayeva of the womens tennis team has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week.
Mikalayeva, a native of Minsk, Belarus and the 2000 Valley Freshman of the Year, is on a seven match winning streak after defeating Evansvilles Bambi McCann (6-2, 6-2) and Erika Ochoa of Southern Illinois (6-2, 6-2) this weekend at No. 1 for the Redbirds.
The two victories move Mikalayevas spring record to 16-4 and 26-8 overall. In league play, she has a stellar career record of 21-1.
The No. 1 Redbird doubles team comprised of Mikalayeva and Liina Suurvarik beat Fox/Hoener of Evansville (8-4) and Ochoa/Serrot of Southern Illinois (8-3) to improve to 20-4 overall.
Mikalayeva and the Redbirds (16-5, 7-0) wrap up the regular season this weekend on the road at No. 55 Southwest Missouri State and Wichita State.
