Redbirds Look to Rebound against Westerwinds

After dropping two-of-three games to Evansville this past weekend, the Illinois State softball team will look to rebound against Western Illinois Wednesday when the Redbirds travel to Macomb, Ill., for a non-conference single game at 4 p.m. Inclement weather forced the suspension of Illinois States single game with Indiana State Monday. It was the final game in an interrupted three-game series that began April 4 at the Redbird Softball Complex. At this point, a time to resume the game has not been established. The Westerwinds hold a 25-16 record coming off a 2-2 split with Oakland over the weekend. They host Bradley on Tuesday for a single, non-conference game at 4 p.m. before facing the Redbirds on Wednesday, who bring a 26-15 mark into the match. April Schermann and Becky McMurtry continue to have the offensive power for the Birds this season, posting a batting average of .373 and .360, respectively. McMurtry batted .500 against the Purple Aces this weekend and blasted the game-winning double RBI in ISUs lone 1-0 win. The Westerwinds took the Birds sails out from under them last season, closing down ISU 2-0 at the Redbird Softball Complex. The all-time record between the two schools does stand strong for ISU with the Redbirds up 42-28. A regionally-ranked opponent, Western Illinois was a NCAA regional qualifier last season, losing their first two games of the regional in a 1-0 decision against Utah and 6-0 loss to national powerhouse Washington. ISUs game against WIU is its final non-conference game of the season before the Redbirds wrap-up their schedule with Missouri Valley Conference series against Northern Iowa and Wichita State. The Panthers travel to Normal this weekend for a three-game series before the Redbirds conclude their regular season in Wichita the first weekend in May.
