Going into the Missouri Valley Conference Team Championships No. 3 in the team standings, the Illinois State mens tennis team defeated Southwest Missouri State Friday in the first round of play.
No. 1 singles Ricky Heath overtook Missouris Jan Vanco, 6-2, 6-4, who Heath defeated last weekend in a regular season match, 6-1, 7-5. At the No. 2 spot Yew Ming Si battled against Leonard Perry to a 6-4, 7-6(7-2) victory while Albert Piasecki toughed it out against Toni Reithmar, 7-6,(8-6), 6-4 at No. 5.
No. 1 doubles Heath and Si managed an 8-5 victory over Vanco and Rishi Garbharran with Piasecki and Thommas de Liefde capturing a win at No. 3, 8-6.
Saturday the Redbirds will take on Drake at 12 p.m. in Cedar Falls,Iowa.
