After a victory over Evansville in the first round of the Missouri Valley Team Championships, the Illinois State womens tennis team defeated Southwest Missouri State Saturday at the Drake Tennis Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Although the Redbirds only picked up four points against Southwest Missouri due to unfinished matches, No. 1 doubles Alesia Mikalayeva and Liina Suurvarik picked up a win against Southwest Missouri, 8-2.
In the finals of the tournament the Redbirds will face Drake in a repeat of last years tournament.
Last years match against Drake was very exciting, head coach Chris Hoover said. They had a lot of families and friends were there and were expecting the same type of crowd this time.
Hoover is pleased with Saturdays win.
Obviously were very pleased with the win, Hoover said. Everyone is upbeat now and also kind of relieved.
The Illinois State, Drake match begins at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Drake Tennis Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
