Shortstop Abbie Scott and second basemen April Schermann of the Illinois State softball team were named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete first-team today.
Scott, a sophomore from Macomb, Ill., and Macomb High School has a 3.93 GPA and is majoring in psychology. She is currently batting .340 in conference play and has four doubles.
Schermann, a senior from Peoria, Ill., and Richwoods High School has a 3.66 GPA and is majoring in math education. Her overall batting average of .375 leads the team and ranks second overall in individual league standings. She also has 29 RBI and three home runs.
Both first-time selections, Scott and Schermann received the honor after being voted on by sports information directors in the conference. The criteria for the Valley Scholar-Athlete Team parallels the Verizon/CoSIDA standards for academic all-America voting.
Nominees must be starters or reserves with at least a 3.00 GPA and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing.
