Si Named Verizon Academic All-American

Illinois States Yew Ming Si was selected as a member of the 2001 Verizon Academic All-American University Mens Spring At-Large Team, Tuesday. Si, a native of Ipoh, Malaysia, recently received a degree in applied computer science with a flawless 4.0 GPA. He was nominated for the national honor after being a first-team selection of the 2001 Verizon Academic All-District V University Division Mens Spring At-Large Team. A first-team Valley Scholar-Athlete, Si is one of four student-athletes on the Academic All-America Team with perfect grade point averages. A member of the mens tennis team, Si posted a 30-10 singles mark playing at No. 2 and No. 3. In doubles, Si and teammate Ricky Heath complied a 33-6 mark at No. 1, winning the No. 1 doubles crown at the 2001 Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships. Si, the 2000-01 team captain, helped lead the Redbirds to a third-place conference tournament finish and an overall record of 15-7. Si ranks seventh overall on ISUs career doubles win list with a record of 53-12. A member of the Valley All-Select team, Si has been a member of the AFNI Athletics Honor Roll each of his four semesters at Illinois State. Yew Ming is an incredible young man who is a true achiever, head mens tennis coach Greg Kennett said. Hes willing to do whatever it takes to reach his goals. He is an incredible, congenial young man who has great aspirations and ideas of what he wants to do. This is a great honor for him. Along with football player Adam Waugh, Si is the second Verizon Academic All-American at Illinois State this year. The Verizon Academic All-America Teams are selected by a vote of the 1,800-member College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2.
