In anticipation of its 106th football season, Illinois State has scheduled its second annual Tailgate Practice. The event is set for Thursday, July 26 at the Turner Lot east of Redbird Arena.
Those attending are encouraged to bring grills and all the trimmings for a regular tailgate. The lot will open at 5 p.m., and there is no charge.
We really had a lot of fun with this last year, said athletics director Perk Weisenburger. It gives us a chance to meet with our fans in a casual and fun setting. The turnout was very good last year and we expect it to grow this year.
Head football coach Denver Johnson, his coaching staff, Redbird players and members of the athletics department staff will all be on hand and WJBC will originate its SportsTalk program from the site, as well.
Illinois State opens the football season Aug. 30 at Western Michigan. The first of six home games is set for Sept. 15 against Eastern Illinois. The Redbird freshmen are due to report Aug. 3 and the entire team will be in camp Aug. 6. The first day of practice is Aug. 8.
