Snapping a two-game losing skid, the Illinois State soccer team blanked Wisconsin-Green Bay, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Adelaide Street Field.
The shutout is the second complete game shutout for goalkeeper Lynley Hilligoss and puts the Redbirds at 5-3 on the season while Green Bay slips to 1-7.
Illinois States tenacious defense once again held the opposing team to just three shots while the Birds kept Green Bay goalie Nora Kaitfors on her toes tallying 21 shots.
Im very happy with the way it went today, head coach Pete Kowall said. Its always good anytime you keep the other team from getting opportunities to shoot.
Scoring her fifth goal of the season, junior Annie Wayland knocked in a corner kick from Diana Puckett 20 minutes into the first half.
The score stayed at 1-0 until the clock hit 77:19 when Quincy, Ill. native Michelle Brumbaugh collected her second goal of year on a pass from junior Ty Winkelhake.
Eleven minutes after picking up her first assist of the year, Winkelhake scored her second goal of the season. A Tiffany DeClark corner kick was deflected from a defender right to Winkelhake who sent the ball past the Green Bay goalie.
We stepped up the schedule a little bit this year, but Im not too hung up on records, Kowall said. Things arent going to come easily for this years team. We just have to keep plugging along and prepare for Fridays match.
The Redbirds travel to Springfield, Mo., for two Missouri Valley Conference games next weekend. Friday nights matchup with Drury begins at 7 p.m. while Sundays game at Southwest Missouri State has a kickoff time of 1 p.m.
