No. 28 Illinois State gymnastics team builds on its success with a victory over in-state rivals, No. 27 University of Illinois, 193.650-190.375.
The strong event for the Redbirds proved to be the balance beam, with strong performances by senior Rena Fox (9.800), freshman Carlee Wright (9.850), senior Jamie Reineck (9.675), junior Heather Mohler (9.850), and junior Denise Houda (9.875).
Mohler led the Redbirds by winning the individual all-around title with a score of 38.625. Mohlers title was a repeat against the Fighting Illini, as she took the all-around title last year when the Fighting Illini visited Horton Fieldhouse.
I really didnt go into this meet trying to repeat the individual title from last year. Our main goal was just to improve, and it paid off, said Mohler. Everyone stepped up and improved from last weeks performances.
Head coach Beth Larson is pleased with the victory over the Fighting Illini.
We had a really great meet, said Larson. Our goals were to improve upon last weekend and we did exactly that.
The Redbirds will look to continue their success next weekend as they travel to Colorado to take on Air Force Academy on Jan. 26.
