After droppimg its first two matches of the spring season, Illinois States mens tennis coach Greg Kennett challenged his team to finish matches with more intensity. The Redbirds will get the chance to rise up to that challenge this weekend at the MVC Indoor Individual Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
Ciaran Foley and Brent Steven will lead the Redbirds into battle. Last weekend, Foley defeated Peter Voelz of Butler at No. 4 singles to even his overall record at 5-5. Likewise, Steven defeated Alex Kurz of Butler at No. 5 singles to improve his overall record to 5-7. In addition, Foley and Steven recorded two victories at No. 2 doubles to improve their record to 2-0.
Also playing well for the Redbirds is the doubles duo of Marek Blaskovic and Andy Martin. After losing two of their first three matches, Blaskovic and Martin have won four straight matches. Last weekend, they recorded a victory at No. 3 doubles to improve their record to 5-2.
Without question, the Redbirds will once again have their work cut out for them. The 10-team field features Valley rivals Bradley, Creighton, Evansville, No. 27 Indiana State, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois, Southwest Missouri State, Wichita State and host Drake. As if the field was not competitive enough, three members of No. 27 Indiana State are currently ranked among the top 100 singles players in the nation.
Despite the high level of competition, coach Greg Kennett is thrilled to see how his team stacks up against some of the best the Valley has to offer.
Playing in this tournament is always a good way to see what other Valley schools have this year, said Kennett. Everyone is excited about competing in this tournament.
The MVC Indoor Individual Championships will begin on Friday, January 25 and run through Sunday, January 27.
