Betsy McDonald paced the Illinois State women's cross country team with a sixth-place individual finish and a time of 19:01.42 as the Redbirds finished fifth at the meet with 105 total points in Carbondale, Ill.
Leah Smith was the next finisher for the 'Birds at No. 11 with a time of 19:11.09, while Andrea Black came across the finish line at No. 22 with a time of 19:47.67.
Other finishers on the women's side included: Liz Callham at No. 32 (20:02.02), Melanie Schwarz at No. 34 (20:06.93), Angela Bartsch at No. 49 (20:40.05), and Lindsay Carpenter at No. 50 (20:40.64).
The men's team ran only four runners in the race and were unable to be scored for team competition.
John Shaffer led the way for the Redbirds with a time of 26:24.46 and a 15th place finish. Matt Kaplan was the next Illinois State runner to cross the finish line coming in at No. 22 with a time of 26:46.91. Greg Baker and Nate Swartzendruber rounded out the ISU men's finishers coming in at No. 30 (27:20.32) and No. 43 (27:48.73) respectively.
Southeast Missouri State won the women's race with a team score of 47, while Southern Indiana took first in the men's event with a score of 39.
The Illinois State cross country teams will continue action next Saturday at the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet in Terre Haute, Ind.
