The Illinois State womens soccer team entered the weekend with a 3-0 Valley record, but fell to 4-1-1 in Valley play, after Sundays 0-0 tie with Drake at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex in Des Moines, Iowa, and Fridays 1-0 loss to Creighton.
This season is the first for the womens soccer program at Drake. The Bulldogs are off to a fair start as they have a Valley record of 1-2-1, and an overall record of 6-5-3. Head coach Pete Kowall gives credit to the young program.
Drake plays a physical and aggressive game, said Kowall. They are a good team and are going to do well in the league.
Redbird goalkeeper Allison Farrington recorded 14 saves and kept the Bulldogs from scoring on their 23 shots. Illinois State attacked the net with 22 shots in the double overtime game, but were unable to reach the back of the net.
We didnt play all that well, added Kowall. Drake was organized well, and made it difficult to get chances to score. I think we only created one or two good opportunities to score.
Illinois State will return to action next weekend as they travel to Evansville, Ind., to take on the Purple Aces on Friday, October 18, for a 7:30 p.m. game. The Redbirds then head to Terre Haute, Ind., on October 20 to take on the Sycamores of Indiana State at 1:00 p.m.
