Redbird quarterback Mike Souza was named Gateway Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for two touchdowns and passing for 275 yards against No. 25 Southern Illinois Saturday at Hancock Stadium.
The junior transfer from Royal Oaks, Calif., ended the game with 64 rushing yards as the Redbirds stunned the Salukis with a 35-14 victory, handing them their first conference loss of the year. On the year, Souza has 236 rushing yards which ranks No. 3 in the Redbird record book for most rushing yards in a season by a QB.
With his two touchdowns against SIU, Souza has four TDs on the year all of which have come in the past two games. Illinois State returns to action this Saturday, Oct. 26, against Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls, Iowa.
