For the second straight weekend mother nature made an attempt to slow the ongoing success of Illinois State mens tennis team, but by the end of the day, Jason Smit came out the first round of the ITA All American prequalifying stages looking to continue his success tomorrow in the second round.
Jason Smit won his first round match against Patrick Fillnow (6-2; 6-3) and will play in second round action tomorrow that would have been completed Friday afternoon if not for rain delays that postponed play until 6:00 p.m. Smit will face Vincent Ng of Ohio State tomorrow in the second round.
Coach Greg Kennett feels that Smit has a very good chance to win tomorrow morning and to continue his winning ways throughout the tournament.
Smit played very smart today and ran down a lot of balls, expressed Kennett. He definitely has a chance of qualifying.
Ciaran Foley also competed Friday as he was designated as an alternate late last night, but fell to Maisas Serrano (6-4; 6-4).
Coach Kennett was pleased with Foleys effort despite the loss.
Foley fought hard and played very well, said Kennett, but it just wasnt meant to be for Ciaran today.
Ben Pettinari and Djordje Uskokovic were still competing in first round action at the time of release.
Second round singles competition will resume Saturday morning along with the first round of doubles competition.
