Annie Wayland, a senior forward for the Illinois State womens soccer team, has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week for her performance this past weekend as the Redbirds recorded victories over Drury and Southwest Missouri State.
Wayland, the 2001 Valley Player of the Year and native of St. Peters, Mo., scored half of Illinois States goals over the weekend. Her game-winning goal in Fridays game versus Drury came at the 38:15 mark, and left the Panthers on the offensive for the remainder of the game. Illinois State beat Drury, 1-0.
On Sunday, Wayland scored her 56th career goal and sixth goal of the season on a penalty kick past SMS goalkeeper, Alexis Stormo, at the 67:23 mark. This put the Redbirds up 2-1, leading to an eventual 3-2 victory over the Bears.
Wayland currently leads the Valley thisseason in shots per game (3.60), goals per game (0.60) and game-winning goals (3), and sits in second for points (14) and goals (6).
