It took an extra period to determine Creighton the winner of the IronKids/Missouri Valley Conference Womens Soccer Championship by beating Illinois State 1-0, Sunday, November 10, at the Sportport Soccer Complex.
Creightons Kelan Brill sent the ball to the back of the net with 19.9 seconds left in the first period of overtime, as Redbird goalkeeper Allison Farrington rushed Brill.
Head coach Pete Kowall was disappointed with the outcome of the game, but was very proud of his team.
We got the championship game and now we know what it is like to get here, said Kowall. I very proud of the four seniors and the dedication they have shown. Its a matter of playing better, and we just didnt possess the ball well today.
It is always going to be tough playing in this league, added Kowall. The highs are highs and the lows are lows; that is just the way sports are.
At the end of the first half, the Redbirds and Blue Jays were tied, 0-0. Despite Creighton out shooting Illinois State 14-2, the Blue Jays only recorded one shot on goal, while Creightons goalkeeper, Jaimie Thompson, saved both shots by the Redbirds. The first half was very physical; as Creighton was called for ten fouls and Illinois State recorded six.
The second half concluded with the Redbirds and Blue Jays tied at 0-0. Illinois State fired three shots in goal while Creighton attacked the goal four times.
Farrington, Tiffany DeClark and Heather Forsyth were each named to the Valley All-Tournament team.
The Redbirds finished the 2002 season with an overall record of 11-5-3 and the Second Place Valley trophy.
