Senior Melissa Colthrust and junior Tiffany DeClark were repeat selections on the 2002 Missouri Valley Conference Womens Soccer Scholar-Athlete Team. Sophomore Heather Forsyth received an Honorable Mention.
Colthrust, the 2002 Valley Defensive Player of the Year and a native of Mississauga, Ontario, carries a grade point average of 3.23 in exercise science and fitness. She was also named to the All-Valley First Team.
In addition to being a repeat selection, DeClark was a unanimous selection. The Buffalo Grove, Ill., native was also an All-Valley First Team pick, a Valley All-Tournament selection and Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Game for the Valley Championship Game. DeClark carries a 3.93 grade point average in public relations.
Forsyth, a defender from Burlington, Ontario, received an Honorable Mention for her grade point average of 3.46 in special education and her performance over the season. She was also an All-Valley Honorable Mention and a Valley All-Tournement selection.
A total of 33 student-athletes were nominated for the Valleys scholar-athlete team. The criteria parallels the Verizon/COSIDA standards for the Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale). In addition, students must have participated in at least 75 percent of the regular-season matches. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore standing at their respective institution and have completed at least one academic year at their institution.
