Suurvarik Survives Tough Competition at Midwest Blast

After day one of University of Illinois Midwest Blast, Redbird Liina Suurvarik has earned her way into the quarterfinal round of singles, as well as the semi-final round of doubles competition with partner Alesia Mikalayeva. After receiving a bye in round one, Suurvarik defeated Minnesotas Michaela Havlekova in round two of singles play, advancing herself into tomorrows quarterfinal round. Suurvarik also received a bye through round one of doubles play with partner Alesia Mikalayeva. The duo went on to defeat Georgia Techs Lyndsay Shosho and Annelies Schenk, 8-3 in the quarterfinal round. Though Suurvarik was the only Redbird to advance in singles, two other Birds made their presence known in the second round of competition. Redbird Alesia Mikalayeva and Emilie Sechaud both received a bye through round one before meeting their matches during round two. Mikalayeva fell to Georgia Techs Mysti Morris (6-1, 6-1), and Sechaud was defeated by Illinois Tiffany Eklov (6-4, 6-0). Complete tournament results can be viewed at www.fightingillini.com.
