Behind two goals from Ty Winkelhake, the Illinois State soccer team cruised to a 4-0 victory against FC Milwaukee in the title game of the Illinois Indoor Tournament, Saturday in Champaign.
Winkelhake, along with Michelle Brumbaugh and Tiffany DeClark, provided the offensive firepower with four goals as Redbird goalkeepers Cheryl Sarnwick and Allison Farrington kept FC Milwaukee scoreless in the championship game. The Birds ended the tournament with a record of 6-1.
Advancing to the semi-finals after winning their pool, the Redbirds blanked Oakland, 1-0, for the right to play in the title game against FC Milwaukee, winners against Illinois in the other semi-final game. Diana Puckett scored the lone goal of the game against the Golden Grizzlies while Farrington kept the Oakland offense at bay allowing no goals.
In game one, the Birds got two goals from Valley Player of the Year Annie Wayland and one goal apiece from Winkelhake and Dana Schulte en route to a 4-1 win.
Winkelhake added two goals in the second game against Milwaukee while Robyn Brady, Melissa Colthrust and Lindsey Soderborg each chipped in one goal in the 5-0 shutout in the second game.
The Birds were held in check by Carmel, as Illinois State edged the club team, 4-3. Soderborg scored her second goal of the afternoon, and Lauren Kahlenbeck, Wayland and Brumbaugh each tallied one goal in the win.
In game four, the Redbirds went on a scoring rampage, cruising past Elmhurst College 15-0. Wayland led the way with three goals while Chrystal Johnston, Kahlenbeck, Brumbaugh and Schulte knocked in two goals each. Diana Puckett, Sheila Bryant, Soderborg and Brady all cracked the scoring column with one goal as the Birds won their fourth game in pool play.
Facing Dayton in the final game of pool play, Colthrust, Johnston and DeClark each punched a goal past the Flyers keeper, but it was no enough as Dayton upended Illinois State 5-3.
