Birds Deal Evansville Fourth Conference Loss

Audra Rast led Illinois State past Evansville 6-1 on Sunday, firing her 13th consecutive win, eighth in conference, improving the Redbirds record to 20-13 overall, 13-2 in the MVC. Rast (14-2) hurled eight strikeouts and allowed only five hits in the victory over the Aces. Head coach Melinda Fischer was happy with Rasts performance and the effort shes given down the stretch. Audra started out so strong today, said Fischer. She gave us confidence and helped us to win the ballgame. Offensively the Birds were hot, smacking 11 hits off of the Evansville pitchers. Freshmen Kate Stake and Mandi Garner recorded a good day at the plate combining for four hits and two RBI. The Birds received doubles from Jamie Bagnall and Abbie Scott, who hit her ninth of the year, and continues to lead the Redbirds in extra base hits. Fischer was happy with her teams performance refering to some changes they made against freshman pitcher Casey Clutch (11-11) who defeated the Birds in conference action on Saturday in game two of the doubleheader, 6-2. I was excited about how we played today, Fischer said. We made a lot better adjustments against Clutch and we definitely came ready to play. I thought we took advantage of some of Evansvilles mistakes. Dominique (Borba) did a nice job at shortstop and made a few nice plays. I thought we got some nice opportunities. Illinois State are scheduled to face off against Wichita State next Saturday and Sunday. The seniors will be honored before Saturdays game which will take place at noon.
