Freshman Kyle Vasel led the Illinois State mens golf team to a fifth place team finish at the Illinois Intercollegiate. Vasel logged a team-low score of 73 to finish in a tie for third place individually.
Sophomore Walter Brown and senior Adam Goldie were the next highest Redbird finishers, making the top 15 with a tie for 14th place, both turned in a score of 77. Following Brown and Goldie in the Illinois State standings was sophomore Denny Bull. Bull finished in a tie for 18th, after logging a score of 78. Sophomore Brian Anderson rounded out the Redbird crew with a tie for 29th, and a score of 81.
As a team the Redbirds finished fifth in a very competitive six-team field. The Birds finished with a team score of 305, just three strokes shy of third-place, and five short of second.
Taking the team title for the tournament was Southern Illinois, finishing with a team score of 298. Close behind in second was Augustana with 300, followed by Northern Illinois and Bradley in a tie for third with 302.
Brian Kolmer of Southern Illinois was the individual medalist of the tournament, finishing with a score of 70.
The Redbirds resume golf action April 29-30 when they compete at Silvis, Ill. in the Missouri Valley Conference Championship.
