Scott and Rast Lead The Redbirds In Double Defeat Over Northern Iowa

Abbie Scott hit her 10th double of the year and Audra Rast hurled a three-hitter in two defeats over Northern Iowa on Sunday, 8-1, 6-1. After the doubleheader cancellation on Saturday, the Birds played their games on Sunday with temperatures below 40 degrees. Head coach Fischer was pleased with how her players handled the weather. I thought we played pretty well considering the conditions, said Fischer. It was not an ideal situation playing wise because the field wasnt in very good condition to begin with due to the rain. But by the second game it was much better. The Redbirds tallied 11 hits in the first game behind freshmen Kate Stake, who doubled, Dominique Borba and Lauren Biewirth each marking a good day at the plate. The only run for Northern Iowa came off of a Panther home run. In game two, Corey Harris started on the mound but was hit in the hand by a line drive taking her out of the game. Rast releived Harris for the win. Both Scott and Harris ripped doubles in the victory. The Redbirds improved their record to 28-14 overall, 19-3 in MVC action and continue to hold the top spot in the conference with Southern Illinois and Evansville trailing in the two and three spot. Illinois State will take on Southwest Missouri State next weekend in Springfield, Mo., which will complete regular-season play.
