Mike Quinlan was named Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week after pitching a 2-0 shutout over No. 9 Wichita State Saturday. He held the league-leading Shockers to just five hits in his second complete game of the year.
After a six-hour rain delay, the Birds took the field and followed Quinlan, a Champaign, Ill. native, to their first win over WSU since April 22, 1995. It was the first shutout by an Illinois State pitcher in 2002 and the first time the Shockers had been whitewashed since April 6.
Quinlan, who owns a team-best 4.02 ERA, struck out four in nine innings. In 11 apearances this season, he has pitched 65 innings, allowing 69 hits, 35 runs and fanning 33, the third-highest total on the team.
