Redbirds Named to 2002 Verizon Academic At-Large Team

Deborah Birrer, a swimmer from Illinois State, has been named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District V University Division Womens At-Large First-Team. Liina Suurvarik, a Redbird tennis standout, has been named to the second-team. Birrer, a senior and co-captain of the swimming and diving team, carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average in athletic training. She is a member of the 2002 Valley Scholar-Athlete Team. In 2001, she was honored as a 2001 Bone Scholar, the highest honor awarded at Illinois State University. Suurvarik, a sophomore from Tallin, Estonia, holds a 3.81 GPA in international business. Her overall record for the Redbirds 2002 season was 31-6 in singles and 30-6 in doubles play. These student-athletes will join athletes from other districts on the Verizon Academic All-America Womens At-Large ballot, with that election to take place later this month.
