Senior Adam Goldie led the way for the Illinois State mens golf team in competition at the NCAA West Regional in Albuquerque,N.M. Goldie finished out the tournament with a 224 (73-73-78) three-round stroke total, en route to the highest individual placement for the Redbirds in a tie at 60th.
Senior Nic Baker was the next highest Redbird finisher, ending the tourney in a tie for 99th. Baker turned in a three-round total of 229 (78-76-75) strokes. Following Baker was freshman Kyle Vasel who finished in a tie for 107th after shooting a total of 231 (75-80-76) strokes in the three rounds played. Sophomore Brian Anderson and senior B.J. Brown rounded out the Illinois State crew with Anderson finishing in 112th (77-78-77=232),and Brown coming in at 123rd (76-79-80=235).
As a team the Redbirds finished the tourney in 24th-place out of 27 teams. The Birds posted a team total of 913 (301-306-306) strokes.
Tying for the team title in the tourney were the University of New Mexico and the University of Washington with 872. UNLV barely edged out the University of Minnesota for third place. UNLV finished in third with a total of 874 strokes, while the University of Minnesota posted an 875 for fourth place. Rounding out the top five was Pepperdine University, which logged an 877 for the tournament.
Ricky Barnes, hailing from the University of Arizona, tied Justin Smith of the University of Minnesota for medalist honors in the competition. Both shot a 210 for the tourney.
