Abbie Scott and Cutie Taylor have been named to the 2002 Missouri Valley Conference Softball Scholar-Athlete First-Team.
Scott, a native of Macomb, Ill., and Redbird right fielder, was one of six players from the league to repeat this honor from last year. She is a junior psychology major and carries a 3.96 GPA. Scott earned Valley Scholar-Athlete of the Week on March 25. In addition, she was named to the Valley All-Conference First-Team and the Verizon All-District Second-Team.
Taylor, a senior outfielder from Mt. Zion, Ill., joined the first-team selections by earning a 3.21 GPA in finance. In addition, she was honored as a Second-Team Arthur Ashe Jr. award winner, a Valley First-Team All-Conference Selection, a Valley Player of the Year Finalist and a member of the Verizon All-District First-Team.
The crtiteria for the Valley Scholar-Athlete Team coincides with the Verizon/CoSida standards for academic all-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their respective universities.
