With 22 student-athletes notching "Straight As," 156 Illinois State University student-athletes achieved AFNI Honor Roll status by earning a 3.00 or higher grade point average on a 4.00 scale for the Spring, 2002 semester. That represents nearly 45 percent of Illinois States 345 student-athletes.
The totals dont surprise Illinois State Athletics Director Perk Weisenburger, but the numbers impress him.
This shows that our program not only is committed to being competitive on the court and on the field, but in the classroom as well, said Weisenburger. Its a tribute to the efforts of the individual student-athletes who have achieved this level of success. It makes me very proud, not only of our student-athletes, but also of the people who support their academic efforts.
With five student-athletes earning straight As, the 2002 Missouri Valley Conference Regular-Season Champions softball team, coached by
Melinda Fischer, earned top honors for team GPA. The 23 softball players combined for a 3.34 semester GPA. Other teams over 3.00 were gymnastics, volleyball, womens golf and womens tennis.
