Veteran PGA golfer and current ESPN golf analyst Charlie Rymer will return to the Bloomington-Normal area for the 23rd D.A. Weibring Redbird Classic on July 1, 2002, at the Illinois State University Golf Course.
Rymer, who joined Weibring in 1997 at the Redbird Classic, also works as a color analyst on the USA Network. Known for his down home humor and quick wit, Rymer quickly became a favorite in Redbird Classic lore. Illinois State head golf coach Harland Kilborn is looking forward to Rymer attending the event again.
When Charlie came in as a substitute for Arnold Palmer in 1997, I had a lot of people come up to me and ask Whos Arnold Palmer?, just because Charlie was such a hit, Kilborn said. He was such a great guy to be with and we had a ball. We are glad to have Charlie back and he will be a great addition to the event.
The Cleveland, Tenn., native turned pro in 1991 and was a member of the PGA Tour from 1995-1997. Rymers best finish came in 1995, with a third-place effort at the Shell Houston Open. He also played on the Buy.com Tour in 1994 and 1998, while claiming medalist honors at the 1994 South Carolina Classic.
Rymer, who was a two-time collegiate all-American at Georgia Tech, was the 1985 USGA Junior Champion and currently holds seven course records around the United States.
