A Break in the Temperature Turns Up the Heat at Hancock Stadium

With temperatures 20 degrees cooler than the previous week, the Illinois State football team got a break in the heat but turned it up a notch in action today at Hancock Stadium after another two-a-day workout. Head coach Denver Johnson said he was grateful for the break in the weather because it seemed to add some life back into the practice. You get to this point in camp and a break in the temperature really makes a difference, Johnson said. Today added some life back to our practice, some of the guys have been getting fatigued with it being so hot. The wear and tear and bumps and bruises are all factors in practice right now but today the guys looked real good. Ray Robinson showed some skill today as did Dennis Butler on the defensive side of the ball this afternoon, Johnson said. Dwayne Smith played well today as did Quincy Washington, who had a few nice runs. After a 60-yard run this morning, Washington followed up a good morning workout with a solid effort in the afternoon. On a screen left, open daylight was seen as Washington took it to the end zone. I had a couple of good runs today, both about 60 yards in each practice, Washington said. All I saw was open daylight and I took it to the end. Both the offense and defense really got it going today. We havent had any major setbacks and we keep moving forward. NOTES: A scrimmage is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug.13 at Hancock Stadium. No score will be kept, but the situational-based scrimmage will be officiated. It is open to the public. We really havent started pairing down guys for the travel squad, Johnson said. The scrimmage will be a time for everyone to have some fun and play but also for us to take a look at certain players and see where we stand.
