After an exhaustive nationwide search, WJBC is pleased to announce John Fitzgerald as the new Sports Director and new play-by--play voice of the Illinois State University Football and Basketball programs.
Fitzgerald comes to WJBC following two years as the Men's Basketball radio and television play-by-play voice for Loyola University in Chicago, and three years as the Loyal Women's Basketball play-by-play voice. He also has served as a sports anchor/reporter for The Sporting News Radio Network in Northbrook, Illinois. In addition, his resume also includes football play-by-play for the University of Saint Francis in Joliet, and 5 years of football and basketball play-by-play for the University of Chicago.
"WJBC has a long tradition of hiring outstanding young sportscasters. Some have gone on to national careers, while others have stayed for many years. We feel we continue that tradition with John Fitzgerald." explains Radio Bloomington General Manager Red Pitcher. "John is familiar with our area and we're anxious to get him involved in the community, and feel he'll be a valuable addition to WJBC's morning show," adds WJBC Station Manager Janae Jontry.
Fitzgerald will make his play-by-play debut on WJBC with the Illinois State Football game at Purdue on August 31st.
"We are pleased that John has been named the 'Voice of the Redbirds' and we welcome him to the WJBC/Redbird family," Director of Athletics Perk Weisenburger said. "John will be a fine ambassador of the Redbird Athletics Department within the Bloomington-Normal community and beyond. He's a quality voice with a passion for intercollegiate athletics and is fine choice to succeed such a long line of talented play-by-play broadcasters at WJBC."
Fitzgerald replaces Mark Johnson, who left WJBC after four years to accept a position as the play-by-play voice for Syracuse University.
