An innovator in broadcasting live college volleyball over the past decade, WJBC (1230 AM) will include internet webcasts along with live, over-the-air play-by-play and on-the-scene report coverage for its 2002 schedule. That slate also includes the Redbirds Sept. 11 date with Stanford, the finale of a daylong broadcast commemoration of the events of Sept. 11, 2001.
In addition to nine live over-the-air broadcasts and four more dates featuring live reports and cut-ins, WJBC is adding five more live matches webcast at www.wjbc.com.
WJBC Program Director R.C. McBride, who also calls the play-by-play for Redbird volleyball, is excited about how technology and programming came together to produce the webcasts, which premiered with the Pantagraph Baseball and Softball All-Star Games in June.
Its a great way to expand our sports coverage, said McBride. The web already allows people beyond our listening area to stay in touch with our station. The matches on the web will give more people more chances to hear Redbird volleyball.
In 1993, WJBC began airing Redbird volleyball as one of the first commercial stations in the United States to broadcast college volleyball. Volleyball play-by-play is still not widespread, but it has a tradition of success in Central Illinois--something Redbird head coach Sharon Dingman appreciates.
What WJBC does for Illinois State volleyball is just incredible, said Dingman, who starts her third season at the helm of the Redbirds Aug. 30 against Florida State in the Barker GMC Classic at Redbird Arena. It is one more way our fans can stay connected to Redbird volleyball. The expanded schedule is a real bonus.
McBride, winner of the 2002 Illinois Broadcasters Assn. award for best play-by-play, begins his third season of Redbird volleyball play-by-play work. He will be joined for the second year by former Illinois State star Kendra Haselhorst, who was the 1999 Missouri Valley Conference Most Valuable Player.
