Last week, Illinois State football head coach Denver Johnson challenged his players to dunking their position coaches into water tanks located at the northeast corner of Hancock Stadium at the end of practice. The Redbird football team accepted the challenge then, soaking all the members of the coaching staff except Johnson, but today his staff, as well as the team, got revenge as Johnson was the recipient of a water-soaking extravaganza to end Saturdays practice.
Brrrr, Johnson said. That was quite a surprise. It was an indication that we had a really good practice and the team felt the same way.
We came out this morning and concentrated and focused and got some stuff done on special teams, Johnson continued. Our team periods started to drag in the end, especially offensively, but defensively I thought those players had a great morning. I am really happy and pleased with the way these guys came out today. It was a bit of an extended practice, but they went about their business and played well.
With an afternoon off, the team will meet Saturday evening for meetings at 6 p.m. before having a skit session to put a light spin on things before heading into game week.
These guys will be back here this evening for meetings and tonight we are having a little talent show, Johnson said. Afterwards, my staff and I will start pairing down the game plan and decide exactly what we are going to do in the game against Purdue.
Going into Monday we should have a pretty good handle on what we have and what we can do with it. Obviously, nothing is final until we get off the bus at the stadium on game day, but next week will be interesting. We will come out here and rehearse. I dont call it practice, it will be rehearsing for our performance next Saturday.
