Illinois State head coach Denver Johnson announced that the Redbird football team elected Vito Golson, Boomer Grigsby, Jon Laurenti and Ray Robinson as its captains for the 2002 season, Monday.
I think the team did a good job of selecting a good representation, Johnson said. We didnt go into the process thinking that we had to have three, four or five captains. Instead we wanted to try to find a natural break between the consensus and the others. By chance, it turned out that we ended up with two offensive and two defensive players. But, all four young men are a fine choice. Each one is a leader, on and off the field, and they will do an exceptional job directing this football team.
The four recipients, along with the team, were informed prior to practice.
The Redbirds start the season on Saturday, as Illinois State travels to West Lafayette, Ind., to face Purdue. Kick-off is slated for 1:00 p.m. CST. The Illinois State home opener versus Quincy is September 7. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the Redbird Arena Ticket Office at 309/438-8000.
