When Illinois State opens volleyball practice this week, three familiar faces wont be on hand. After two seasons at Illinois State, assistant coach Jeni Jones is departing to become the top assistant coach at Southwest Missouri State. Outside hitter Megan OConnell intends to transfer to Oklahoma and defensive specialist Wendi Roesch, a freshman last year, has decided not to compete at ISU.
Jones, a former University of Florida volleyball star, served on the staff of head coach Sharon Dingman as the Redbirds were 36-23 over the past two seasons.
Jenis new position will give her new opportunities and challenges, said Dingman. We appreciate all she did for Illinois State and wish her well as she continues her career.
OConnell led the Redbirds in kills and points in 2002. The two-time all-Missouri Valley Conference choice is headed to Oklahoma, where she will likely play for former Illinois State assistant coach Kalani Mahi, now head coach of the Sooners.
At this point in her life, this could be a good thing for Megan, said Dingman. She has contributed to our success at Illinois State and we appreciate that. Now, she has an opportunity at Oklahoma.
Roesch averaged 1.64 digs per game in 102 games last season for the Redbirds. According to Dingman, the former University High School stand-out is contemplating several options.
Wendi may remain at Illinois State as a student, or she could transfer to another school and play volleyball, said Dingman. We enjoyed having her as part of the program and wish her nothing but the best whatever she decides.
The Redbirds begin preseason drills Wednesday and open the season Aug. 30 against Florida State in the Barker GMC Classic.
