Head coach Denver Johnson said through two days of practice at Hancock Stadium, his team is showing early signs of increased speed on the offense and is impressed with the the way the players are handling the two-a-day schedule.
There is so much hard work going on out here, Johnson said. Today was a very spirited practice and I was really impressed by a log of things. I have been observing our speed on the offense and it looks like we might have increased that.
Jon Laurenti is having a great camp, Johnson said. He looks to be a little faster and quicker than what he did in the past and that is great to see since he can really contribute to us as well. Mike Larson can really run and catch the ball nicely. He is tough in there blocking as well and that gives us an edge in the tight end spot.
Our rushing game has been a main part of our morning workout, Johnson said. There is a good collection of guys back there that are battling it out. Quincy (Washington) looks to be at the front of the pack but there are a bunch of guys right behind him that are impressing me with their speed.
With the morning practice focused on run-emphasized drills and the short passing game, the players were still getting used to maneuvering on the new turf. No major injuries have been reported since camp began, but a few slips did occur.
The guys are really still getting used to playing on the turf, Johnson said. We have to get the mentality that, even though it looks like natural surface, it is still turf and we are still trying to find our legs on it. We utilize the grass practice field also, so combining time between the two surfaces could be a contributor.
