Sophomore Kyle Vasel led the Redbird mens golf team to a third place tie with his two under par performance in tournament play at the Fairway Club Invitational in Lincoln, Neb.
Vasel (71-72-69=212) shot a 69 on the day to finish in a tie for second place overall, his best collegiate finish thus far in his young career. Vasel finshed just one shot behind the tournament medalist. Two other Redbirds finished in the top 25 with freshman Chris Eddy (72-74-78=224) turning in a 78 on the day to place him in a tie for 21st, and junior Brian Anderson (74-73-78=225) also shooting a 78 to finish in a tie for 25th.
Rounding out the Redbird flock were freshmen Kris Wildenradt (79-74-73=226) in a tie for 32nd,with a 73 on the day, and Kurt Sroka (76-78-81=235) who finished in a tie for 51st and with a score of 81 for the final day of play.
As a team the Birds improved their placement from yesterday by one spot to finish out the tournament in a tie for third with a score of 884 (293-293-298=884). Kansas State University also finished the tourney with an 884 295-287-302=884) to tie the Redbirds.
Taking the team title for the tournament was Oklahoma City University, who finished with a score of 872 (291-285-296=872). Iowa State University scored an 876 (287-290-299=876) to take second place.
Jeremy Lyons of Iowa State University claimed medalist honors for the tournament, finishing with a three round total of 211 (70-71-70=211).
The Birds resume golf action Sept. 15-17 when they host the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate at the University Golf Course in Normal.
