'Birds Begin Action at Columbia

The Illinois State womens tennis team opens its fall season with the Mizzou 4-Way this weekend at Columbia, Missouri. The tournament will also feature Murray State, Southern Illinois University, and host University of Missouri. The Tigers are excited to host the tournament, which will be the only home match for Mizzou this fall. Were obviously looking forward to having a home tournament at our new facility, said Tiger head coach Blake Starkey. Well have some give-aways, great tennis, and it should be a lot of fun. Illinois State University womens tennis head coach Chris Hoover is equally excited to see the season begin. This years Redbird roster includes three returning seniors, Alesia Mikalayeva, Alana Hoffman, and Shelby Lipson; three juniors, Elizabeth Bingier, Liina Suurvarik, and transfer Dasha Cizkova; sophomore Laura Gravino; and two freshmen, Normal Community West High School graduate Ashley Maxwell, and Emilie Sechaud, hailing from Geneva Switzerland. I think that Liina, Alesia, and Shelby are definitely ready to start the season, said Hoover. I have faith that these girls will set a good example for the new team members, and this tournament will be a good way to find out exactly where we stand right now. Only seven of the Redbirds nine team members will be able to compete in the Mizzou 4-Way, which will be conducted as a round-robin. Play begins Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the Green Tennis Center and runs through Sunday.
