Illinois State University Athletics

Redbird Soccer Still Undefeated

Goalkeeper Allison Farrington recorded her second shut-out of the weekend and the third of the season, in the Illinois State womens soccer teams 2-0 win over Xavier on Sunday, September 22 at Adelaide Street Field. The Redbirds now have an overall record of six wins and zero losses. Head coach Pete Kowall felt that the Redbirds did not have the attitude that was needed in the first half to win the game and that showed after a scoreless first half. Things changed in the second half when Illinois State came out with their winning Redbird attitude. At the half we talked about our play, said Kowall. We needed to play, and play hard with the attitude that fuels Redbirds soccer success. The Redbirds first got on the scoreboard with an own goal at the 74:20 mark. Then, junior Diana Puckett scored her second goal of the season off an assist from senior Annie Wayland, at the 82:31 mark to put the Redbirds up, 2-0, over the Musketeers. Xavier is a good team, despite what the record shows, continued Kowall. They have good individual technique and they play with a style that we are not used to. Last year, Illinois State lost to Xavier at Corcoran Field in Cincinnati, Ohio, but today the Redbirds evened the overall series with the Musketeers at one game apiece. The Redbirds will return to action on Thursday, September 26 at 4 p.m. at Adelaide Street Field as the they take on Loyola University.
