Illinois State linebacker Boomer Grigsby racked up two more national honors as he was named NCAA I-AA co-national defensive player of the week by Don Hansens National Weekly Football Gazette and defensive all-star of the week by I-AA.org, an affiliation with College Sporting News.
Grigsbys game-saving tackle on the one-yard line with 26 seconds remaining foiled the Racers two-point conversion and guaranteed an Illinois State victory, 24-23. For the effort, Grigsby was named Gateway Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week and The Sports Network National Div. I-AA Defensive Player of the Week.
The sophomore linebacker had 17 tackles in the game, including 10 solo stops, one sack and four tackles for loss. It was a game-best performance by Grigsby, who holds ISUs freshman season record with 93 tackles. This year, his total is 36.
Illinois State (2-1) returns to action this Saturday when the Redbirds travel to Eastern Illinois to face the No.13 Panthers in Charleston, Ill. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
