Brady, Wayland Lead Redbird Soccer to Another Win

Senior Annie Wayland and sophomore Robyn Brady each scored two goals to give the Redbirds the 4-0 victory over Loyola-Chicago, September 26 at Adelaide Street Filed. This is the fourth shut-out for Illinois State in the 2002 season. Wayland scored both of her goals in the first half, the first coming off a combined assist from Brady and Michelle Brumbaugh at the 29:55 mark. Waylands second goal of the game (fourth of the season) came off an assist from senior Melissa Colthrust at the 40:30 mark. The score at the half was 2-0, Illinois State. It was an intense second half for the Redbirds as Brady opened the half with her third goal of the season at the 47:05 mark. Junior midfielder Sheila Bryant was injured at the 57:09 mark and was taken off the field on a stretcher. An updated report on Bryants injury will be issued once more information becomes available. The Redbirds rallied together and continued their offensive attack on Loyola as Brady scored her second goal of the game at the 60:27 mark off a combined assist from Brumbaugh and Lindsey Soderborg. Junior goalkeeper Cheryl Sarnwick saw action for the first time this season as she replaced senior goalkeeper Allison Farrington at the 53:01 mark. The two recorded a shared shut-out, which is the third shut-out in as many games for Illinois State. Head coach Pete Kowall was unavailable for comment, but assistant coach Pete Cuadrado was very pleased with the attitude and play of the Redbirds. They played awesome, said Cuadrado. They rallied together and played as hard as they could. Even when Sheila went down, they did not let up and that says a lot. As of September 22, Illinois State was one of six NCAA Division I womens soccer teams to remain undefeated. With todays win, the Redbirds improved their perfect record of seven wins and zero losses. The Redbirds return to action on Sunday, September 29 at 12 p.m., as they host Big Ten foe Iowa at Adelaide Street Field. We are heading into the Iowa game just like all of the other games so far this year, said Cuadrado. We play to win and expect to win. We set goals at the beginning of the year, and we are taking it one game at a time.
