Redbird Swimmers Get Feet Wet at Intra-Squad Scrimmage

The Illinois State swimming and diving team displayed a number of bright spots at its annual Red/White Intra-Squad Scrimmage at Horton Pool Friday with senior Angie Rawlins leading the way with three first-place finishes. The white team won the scrimmage 195-159. Rawlins claimed victories in the 50 breaststroke (31.28), 50 fly (27.54) and 200 individual medley (2:12.67). Freshmen Katie Finan and Monique WItkowski made impressive debuts each claiming first-place finishes in two events. Finan won the 800 free (8:37.21) and the 100 IM (1:04.46), while Witkowski took first in the 200 free (2:03.13) and the 50 free (26.28). For having 20 days of practice and weight-lifting under our belts, the girls have made tremendous strides, said Illinois State head swimming and diving coach Steve Paska. However, the team is far from satisfied and plan to head into the Notre Dame Relays prepared and ready to compete. On the diving side, sophomore Terra Whisman won the 1-meter dive competition with 168.05 points, while sophomore Alison Kouba came in second with 157.35. In 3-meter diving, sophomore Krystal Featherston finished in first place with 242.7 points, while Whisman claimed second with 236.1. The meet today was a real marker for where we stand in the season and where we need to go, said head diving coach Laura Segerlin. It is still early in the season and we have a lot of work to do, but I was happy with where the girls are at. The Birds will travel to South Bend, Ind., on Friday, October 4, to compete in the Notre Dame Relays.
